Streetcar Driving Rules in Etobicoke
Drivers in parts of Toronto and Etobicoke may encounter streetcars and streetcar stops. New drivers should understand how to pass safely and how to protect passengers getting on and off.
Pass Streetcars on the Right
Ontario's Driver's Handbook says you normally pass streetcars on the right, except on a one-way road.
Stop at Least Two Metres Behind the Rear Doors
When passengers are getting on or off a stopped streetcar, stay at least two metres behind the rear doors. Do not move forward until passengers are safely clear and the situation allows you to proceed.
Streetcar Safety Islands Are Different
The two-metre stopping rule does not apply where a designated passenger safety island or zone separates passengers from traffic. Even there, pass at a reasonable speed and be prepared for pedestrians to move unexpectedly.
Watch for Pedestrians Before Moving
Do not focus only on the streetcar. Scan for people stepping into or across the roadway, especially near doors, stops, intersections, and parked vehicles.
Do Not Rush Around a Streetcar
Trying to squeeze past a streetcar or passengers can create a serious hazard. Slow down early and make the situation easy to read.
